STEAM, Art and Pancakes! February Highlights in Junior Infants
February Fun in Junior Infants
February was a very busy and exciting month in Junior Infants! The children enjoyed lots of hands-on learning across many subjects and showed great curiosity and enthusiasm in all of our activities.
📚 Literacy
In literacy we continued to build our phonics knowledge and worked on the letter sound Y. The children practised recognising the sound, thinking of words that begin with Y, and forming the letter in their handwriting copies. We also began learning some of our tricky words, which the children are doing a fantastic job remembering.
🔢 Maths
In maths we explored several topics. One of our favourite areas was weight. The children carried out practical activities using balancing scales and classroom objects to discover which items were heavier or lighter. They loved predicting which object would be heavier and testing their ideas.
🔬 STEAM Week
We had great fun celebrating STEAM Week with lots of exciting experiments and investigations.
Some of the activities we tried included:
- Programming and exploring with BeeBots
- The colourful Magic Milk experiment
- Dancing Raisins in fizzy drinks
- Creating beautiful rainbows using Skittles
The children loved observing what happened and discussing why they thought the experiments worked.
🧸 Show and Tell
We continued our Show and Tell sessions where the children shared special items from home. A highlight this month was our Teddy Show and Tell, where lots of favourite teddy bears came to visit the classroom. The children also enjoyed a special Teddy Bear Picnic, which was a lovely way to celebrate our teddy bear theme.
🎨 Art
We explored different art materials including watercolours and oil pastels.
The children created:
- Beautiful apple paintings inspired by the artist Paul Cézanne
- Colourful “Outside My Window in Spring” pictures using oil pastels
To go along with our teddy bear theme, the children also created patchwork teddy bear artwork. They carefully cut and stuck different sections of their teddy bears to create bright patchwork patterns, and the finished pieces look fantastic displayed around the classroom.
🌱 Science
As part of our learning about plants, the children planted sunflower seeds. We are carefully looking after them and hope they will grow big and strong before being sent home!
🏃♂️ P.E.
In P.E. we practised our kicking skills, learning how to control and kick a ball with accuracy. On rainy days we stayed active indoors by completing fun obstacle courses.
🥞 Celebrations
We celebrated Pancake Tuesday by enjoying delicious pancakes together in the classroom. The children also had fun celebrating Valentine’s Day with themed activities.
It has been wonderful to see how enthusiastic and engaged the children have been throughout February. They are learning new skills every day and we are very proud of all their hard work!
